  1. NetManage has released free of charge, Socket Wrencher, a new 
  2. Windows TCP/IP stress testing tool.   Pre-release copies of 
  3. Socket Wrencher were provided last week to the participants of 
  4. the "WinSock Bake-Off" held at Microsoft.  Socket Wrencher is 
  5. being released by NetManage for free distribution and will be 
  6. widely available for performance and stress testing new Windows 
  7. TCP/IP implementations.

  10. Socket Wrencher is available free from NetManage via anonymous 
  11. FTP at ftp.uu.net in the /vendor/NetManage directory.  The file 
  12. is a self extracting zip file called socketw.exe.

  14. About Socket Wrencher
  15. Socket Wrencher is a WinSock application that provides more than 
  16. two dozen different measures of protocol stack performance and 
  17. compatibility.    Socket Wrencher tests a protocol stack 
  18. independent of any particular application such as FTP, Telnet or 
  19. NFS, giving a clearer picture of how well the stack performs in a 
  20. variety of environments.  Performance is tested over TCP and UDP 
  21. in both synchronous and asynchronous operation and in both a send 
  22. only and echo mode.  All tests are run with block sizes ranging 
  23. from 1K to 16K bytes.   In addition to performance, Socket 
  24. Wrencher provides a set of tests that characterize various 
  25. operating parameters of a WinSock based protocol stack such as 
  26. the maximum number of sockets that are available.

  28. NetManage's intention is to help customers get a clearer picture 
  29. of stack performance.  Stack performance is highly dependent on 
  30. the test environment and our intention is to make the test 
  31. methodology less subjective by providing an easy to use standard 
  32. tool.
